The PSDN Leadership Development Project

The Pacific Sexual Diversity Network (PSDN) Leadership Capacity Development Project (2008-2011) aimed to strengthen responses to HIV and AIDS among the MSM and transgender communities of the Pacific.

PSDN logoPSDN is a nascent MSM and transgender network in the Pacific, with members in Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu, Cook Islands and Papua New Guinea.

Until June 2010, the project was implemented in partnership with ACON; a member agency of AFAO and Australia’s largest LGBTI health and HIV related community organisation. The project is funded by AusAID via the HIV Consortium for Partnerships in Asia and the Pacific.

Working with the membership of the PSDN, the project’s primary objectives were to:

  1. Increase capacity of PSDN and its membership in organisational management and leadership
  2. Increase capacity of PSDN and its membership in community leadership
  3. Increase capacity of to PSDN and its membership to transfer skills to others

A number of activities were planned for the duration of the program (2008-2011). These included:

Strategic plan development

AFAO and ACON assisted the PSDN in the development of a 5 year strategic plan. The strategic plan sets out the goals and direction of the PSDN in the areas of advocacy, organisational development and strengthening, the greater involvement of people living with HIV, and capacity development priorities. The plan was launched in August 2009 at ICAAP, Bali.

Community Leadership workshops

With the PSDN membership, AFAO and ACON delivered a number of workshops focusing on a range of specific skills development areas including: strategic planning; community mobilisation; organisational policy development; organisational accountability and transparency; and governance. Following the workshops, in early 2011, AFAO assisted PSDN to deveop policies on governance and related topics.

Train the trainer workshop

In February 2010, AFAO and ACON delivered a train the trainer workshop to strengthen the capacity of PSDN members in facilitation skills; workshop and training design; capacity development strategies; evaluation and other topics. This is intended to assist the PSDN to develop and deliver its own capacity building activities in the future.

Information resources

In 2011, a number of information resources based on workshop topics (including governance; community mobilisation; HIV testing; and GIPA) were developed and disctributed throughout the network's members. These will later be translated into local languages.
