Sex workers have been identified in the Fourth National Strategy on HIV/AIDS as one of the communities most affected by HIV /AIDS. Working to strengthen sex workers’ response to HIV is a high priority for AFAO.
AFAO aims to support and work closely with Scarlet Alliance, the national organisation representing sex workers. Working with Scarlet, the Policy Team has produced key documents relevant to the Australian sex industry:
The Principles for Model Sex Industry Law Reform, (PDF, 194 KB) which analyses current legal approaches to legalising the sex industry and addresses a range of issues such as decriminalisation, public health, local planning laws and discrimination, and foreign sex workers. The document includes fact sheets that summarise each topic, and a lobbying kit.
A Guide to Best Practice: Occupational Health and Safety for the Australian Sex Industry. (PDF, 162 KB) This document addresses the rights and responsibilities of employers and employees, clarifies the role of bodies such as unions and health departments, and provides comprehensive information on issues from workers compensation to condom storage and handling, to security and safety from violence. A series of Fact Sheets summarise important issues and suggest policies for the workplace.
Unjust and Counterproductive: the Failure of Governments to Protect Sex Workers from Discrimination. (PDF, 148 KB) This document is a lobbying tool based on national research conducted with sex workers regarding their experiences of discrimination. It provides arguments for broadening State and Territory anti-discrimination provisions to cover occupational discrimination, overviews the current legal situation across Australia, and identifies strategies for advocacy and activism.
