Melbourne to host AIDS 2014

Melbourne has been selected to host the world’s largest HIV/AIDS Conference in July 2014.

The conference, which is held every two years, attracts up to 25,000 stakeholders in the HIV response from around the world.

The International AIDS Society (IAS), which organises the conference, cited Australia’s “strong political, scientific and civil society commitment to ending the HIV epidemic both nationally and throughout the Asia Pacific region,” as important reasons for selection of Melbourne.

Mr Rob Lake, AFAO Executive Director, commented that holding the conference in Australia will enhance the opportunities for HIV stakeholders from Asia and the Pacific to share their expertise.

“AFAO welcomes this opportunity for affected communities in our region to access a conference of this kind”, he said.

Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd and Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon congratulated Melbourne on its selection.

“Australia is a leader in HIV and AIDS research and response, and winning the right to host the conference pays tribute to that,” Mr Rudd said.
