HIV infections and deaths fall

A new report by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) shows that 2011 was a game changing year for the AIDS response.

The 2011 UNAIDS World AIDS Day report also shows that new HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths have fallen to the lowest levels since the peak of the epidemic.

New HIV infections have fallen by 21% since 1997, and AIDS-related deaths by 21% since 2005.

UNAIDS attributes these gains to the massive scale-up of treatment access that has occurred in recent years.

The Report calls for increased investment in prevention and treatment in order to maintain this success and achieve the 2015 targets of the UN Political Declaration on AIDS.
