Other forms of prevention (Biomedical)
There is now evidence that a number of different biomedical interventions are effective in reducing the transmission of HIV.
There have been favourable results from clinical trials of:
- male circumcision;
- treatments and strategies to prevent mother to child transmission;
- HIV vaccines;
- pre-exposure prophylaxis; and
- a vaginal microbicide.
The use of antiretrovirals by people living with HIV has also recently been demonstrated to dramatically reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to their heterosexual partners.
Biomedical interventions will be an important part of a combination HIV prevention package.
